Air Force Updates, Clarifies DAFI 36-2903 Guidance

Thursday, July 10th, 2025

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) —

The Air Force updated its dress and personal appearance instruction to provide clear guidance for Airmen serving worldwide. The new guidance memorandum for DAFI 36-2903,?Dress and Personal Appearance of Department of the Air Force Personnel, clarifies mandatory uniform items and personal appearance standards while adding visuals for greater clarity. The changes in this guidance memorandum only pertain to Airmen; the U.S. Space Force is projected to release a separate dress and appearance instruction in the coming weeks.

The new guidance:

• OCP Uniform: Requires all officers to maintain one complete set of an Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) uniform

• Eyelash Extensions: Removes authorization of eyelash extensions unless needed for medical reasons

• Combat Boots: Establishes a minimum height for combat boots

• OCP Sleeve Folding/Cuffing: Clarifies the folding or cuffing of OCP sleeves

Under the new guidance, all Air Force officers, regardless of career field, must maintain at least one complete set of either the non-fire-retardant operational camouflage pattern uniform or an improved hot weather combat OCP uniform. Additionally, combat boots must now be between 8-12 inches in height from the bottom of the heel tread to the top of the back of the boot, and soling material will not exceed two inches in height. Airmen must comply with the new uniform and boot height guidance no later than 90 days from the date of the guidance memorandum.

With the publication of this update, eyelash extensions are no longer authorized unless for medical reasons and documented on an Air Force Form 469, Duty Limiting Condition Report. If medical authorization is obtained and documented on an AF Form 469, eyelash extensions will not exceed 12 mm in length. Airmen must comply with the new eyelash extension standard no later than 30 days from the date of the guidance memorandum.

This update also clarifies the policy of folding or cuffing OCP sleeves. When sleeves are not rolled up, cuffs may remain visible, or members may fold their sleeves once or twice as shown in the updated guidance memorandum.

The new guidance memorandum for DAFI 36-2903 will be posted soon.

Environmental Control Corporation – FR Drape Cap and FR Helmet Brim

Tuesday, July 8th, 2025

ECC Gear has just launched two new hats, the FR Drape Cap and Helmet Brim.

Made from TenCate Defender M and Milliken ResQ, these caps are FR which is crucial in protecting the head and neck which contain roughly 1/4 of the body’s cutaneous (skin-surface) nerve endings.

Both caps include loops for routing earplug lanyards, which accommodates systems such as the Ops-Core AMP which feature in-ear near field magnetically induced (NFMI) audio drivers. This routing system also prevents snags which tend to pull out hearing protection at the worst times.

The FR mesh material is lightweight, thin, and made for next to skin use. It compresses under gel ear-cups and does not add bulk or create gaps.

Made with highly breathable fire retardant mesh, the Drape Cap compares favorably to traditional boonie hats. ECC’s low-profile, quick-drying design provides superior head and neck protection without compromising peripheral vision or hearing. When not in use, it packs nearly into a thigh pocket or pouch.

The Drape Cap also incorporates a number of modern creature comforts such as internal routing and storage for electronic earplugs, compatibility with over-ear headsets and helmets, and stretch-fit sizing.

The FR Helmet Brim is low-profile cap designed for use with ballistic helmets, bump helmets, and communication headsets.

A 3/4″ length bill shades the face and eyes without interfering with slings or weapon optics. Tencate fire retardant mesh creates a breathable layer between the scalp and helmet padding — reducing skin irritation caused by occlusion, pressure, and bacteria.

Both are available in S/M or L/XL sizes, using a stretch-fit rear to keep the cap in place. Currently only in OCP / Coyote. Other colors may follow.

I’d like to tack on to this announcement by saying how happy I am to hear that Soffee is once again available. During both of my tours at Fort Bragg, all of my unit PT gear came from Soffee; same goes for Hurlburt Field. Over the years, I also purchased a lot of my own sweats, silkies, and t-shirts made by Soffee, either directly from them or on base.

In fact, silkies were an unofficial part of the uniform. If you were wearing silkies under your BDU pants you could take the pants off and run around the team room in shorts, brown T, and jungle boots.

For decades they were synonymous with unit PT gear and it’s great to see them back.
