SPARTANAT: GEAR MADE IN GERMANY – PHANTOMLEAF

Phantomleaf Interview 1

PHANTOMLEAF is a new camouflage pattern on the market – we saw it first at Enforce Tac and IWA 2019. We have recently presented the first combat clothing in the camouflage pattern. HERE the review of the Leo Köhler set in PHANTOMLEAF. And we wanted to know what the Camo can do? HERE it goes to the first field test. Now we wanted to know who is behind PHANTOMLEAF. Florian Lenz tells us where PHANTOMLEAF comes from, what it can do and what is to come.

Phantomleaf Interview 2

SPARTANAT: PHANTOMLEAF has now presented its first civilian camouflage pattern. What can WASP II Z3a do? Who should use it?
PHANTOMLEAF: As you can see: It can do camouflage and deception. ? The background is simple: We received many inquiries about our patterns from the retail market. However, as we reserve some camouflage patterns to the authorities, what will not be changed in future, we have decided to develop a free-for-sale model for the civilian market. This took some time, but now the effect meets our quality standards. The area of ??application is the area defined in our system as zone “Z3a”: “Growth without snow cover”. This means high vegetation wich is transferred in a pattern with appropriate structure formation, light input as well as predominantly green tint. – see. our website: https://www.phantomleaf.de/tarnsystem/.

Phantomleaf Interview 3

SPARTANAT: PHANTOMLEAF has been haunting the country for a long time, but you have been working very secretively for the public. What are you doing?
PHANTOMLEAF: In our understanding, this concept of confidentiality fits well with the needs of the special-forces units for which we work mainly. Our goal is to provide bespoke camouflage solutions for often very specific camouflaging problems on land, sea and in the air to meet the specific needs of our users. Most of it is confidential, which I ask for your understanding. This is where camouflage and our loyalty to our clients begin.

Phantomleaf Interview 4

SPARTANAT: What is the difference between a government and a civilian model? WASP II Z3a is marked with “CIV” in the logo.
PHANTOMLEAF: I would prefer to talk about systems for the government market and systems for the retail market. Both have different needs in detail. Examples include things such as deployment distance to the reconnoitering opposite, tactical behavior and threat situation called. These are reflected, e.g. in the geometry of the camouflage pattern or thermal camouflage properties, the material properties (e.g., flame retardancy) and friend-foe detection, as well as the cutting of the readymade items. In addition, our camouflage patterns marked CIV are freely negotiable. Patterns intended for authorities are only delivered to selected partner companies: https://www.phantomleaf.de/partner/. The protection of our customers is important to us, so that we create both contractual and in the labeling (impression “CIV”) commitment with these partners. That clear handling easy for everyone.

Phantomleaf Interview 5

SPARTANAT: How did you come up with the idea of entering the camouflage industry in Germany?
PHANTOMLEAF: I have been in camouflage for about 30 years – primarily to solve a problem, not to use it economically. The trigger is a personal, unpleasant, which I will not go into here. In doing so, I discovered a general principle for pattern generation, which has since been patented. The camouflage patterns produced with this have the significant advantage over various backgrounds of significantly reducing the recognizability of the camouflaged object. Furthermore, they are tailored to the size and geometric relationships of this object. Of course, this clearly increases the flexibility of the user: on the one hand, when moving from different backgrounds to, on the other hand, when he is under threat of reconnaisance from different angles. The latter will, in my estimation, in future be increased by automation such as e.g. using drones. Due to the achievable, highly effective results with these algorithms, I founded the PHANTOMLEAF GmbH in 2008 in order to make this invention usable for the protection of persons for whom I wanted to do something. Meanwhile, this company acts as a development office and Mr. Ulrich Krätzschmar (RECON-COMPANY) and I have together founded the PHANTOMLEAF 4USE GmbH in order to optimally shape the growing production and distribution of the original PHANTOMLEAF products for our customers. We see ourselves as an international company – with “made in germany” roots. This is reflected by our numerous specialist dealers: https://www.phantomleaf.de/handel/. These companies listed on our website also have a contractual obligation to strictly observe the market segmentation in authorities and retail markets for the protection of our government customers.

Phantomleaf Interview 6

SPARTANAT: How do you approach the planning of a pattern with PHANTOMLEAF? What demands do you place on you?
PHANTOMLEAF: The approach is very individual, depending on the client approaching us, the object to be camouflaged, and the tactical circumstances such as e.g. place and time of operation. In any case, the systemic approach is important to us: In our experience not only a camouflage pattern should be created, but a coherent overall concept right down to a totally and systemically product design optimized for camouflage: It begins with materials selection, goes over the camouflage pattern, up to cut management and other points to deal with. We have the experience, that such a consequent approach increases the performance of the camouflaged system compared to only dealing with the invention of a pure camouflage pattern. In the end, we definitely want to have a solution for our customers that meets their needs as close to 100% as possible. Since we mostly deal with complex systems at the end, we work together with our partners from the beginning of system development. Our main focus is the “soldier system”.

Phantomleaf Interview 7

SPARTANAT: WASP II Z3a is, so to speak, the “green” pattern in the new PHANTOMLEAF line. What else is there to do?
PHANTOMLEAF: Next, a “brown” version is planned: WASP II Z2. It is suitable for regions with low, especially semi-desert-like growth: https://www.phantomleaf.de/tarnsystem/. But we have the experience that this colorit can also serve well in autumnal winter areas, for example in Central Europe. Also envisioned is a “gray” variant Z4 designed for urban / man made environments.

Phantomleaf Interview 8

SPARTANAT: Will there be all the gear in the new PHANTOMLEAF WASP II samples? What’s up?
PHANTOMLEAF: Thank you for asking this question. Already now many inquiries reach us. The answer is yes. There will be many articles in the near future, from head to toe, so to speak. Of course also suitable gear and bags.

Royal Marines Unleash Heavy Weapons During Training On Salisbury Plain

Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019

Royal Marines unleashed their heavy weapons and armoured vehicles to assault ‘enemy’ positions during battles on Salisbury Plain.

Armed to the teeth and backed by Viking and Jackal vehicles, 45 Commando led an assault through Berrill Valley, pushing their adversary back across villages and bridges using some of their most potent anti-armour weaponry.

Ten different pockets of resistance were routed in a day-long assault, as the commandos tackled undulated terrain and driving rain in Wiltshire, ahead of stepping off on deployments in the jungle, desert and Arctic in the next few months and into next year.

It was a chance for the heavy weapons experts, the Fire Support Group (FSG), of the Arbroath-based unit to test their machine guns, grenade machine guns and Javelin anti-tank weaponry on the battlefield.

The FSGs and X-Ray Company were transported into location using the Vikings to a site near the enemy before, with ruthless efficiency, gaining the upper hand during assaults.

With the FSG using their heavy weapons, laying down supressing fire in positions flanking enemy targets, X-Ray tested their close combat abilities, working through the valley and into the village of Imber – a settlement abandoned in 1943 to make way for training for the invasion of Europe in World War Two.

This was the fiery crescendo of the tactical phase of Exercise Blue Steel and Exercise Viking Warrior, which started with live firing, where FSGs from around 3 Commando Brigade gathered to blow off the cobwebs on the ranges.

“It’s important to shake out when we can to improve our ability to conduct those operations and avoid skill fade,” said Captain Oli Crow, Officer Commanding of 45 Commando Fire Support Groups.

“Each commando has a selection of FSGs which are a part of each close combat company and they provide the direct fire support capability to enable close combat troops to engage the enemy.

“It goes back to fighting a near peer enemy. You can expect them to have heavy armour which is a far cry from the previous decade when they haven’t.

“We have to ensure we can combat such a threat. It’s a really important aspect. We can’t predict what will happen but there are adversaries out there with high-tech equipment that matches or surpasses our own, so need to clearly know how to combat it.”

The marines cleared through woodland, hamlets and into Imber before taking back two strategically vital bridges from the enemy.

They moved on Vikings across a 10km area, each time with the FSG providing firepower to X-Ray’s commandos before they committed to the decisive assaults.

After being on the ranges, this was about perfecting their skills and offering the chance to work alongside armoured vehicles.

“Our role is to provide support to the troops from a nearby position. We’ll suppress a target from a distance, so we’ve got stand-off from their weapons systems and capabilities,” said anti-tank expert Marine Lewis Boateng of Zulu Company’s Fire Support Group.

“Once we’ve supplied that suppressive rate of fire that’s when the troops sweep through into positions.

“We’re due to go to the jungle in two weeks’ time. We haven’t done any anti-tanks for a while, so it’s great to blow off the cobwebs.”

Major Sam Hughes, Officer Commanding of X-Ray Company, was pleased to put his commandos through their paces.

He said: “Sitting on the range is one thing. Doing that in the wind and rain we’ve experienced this week in a tactical scenario, working with those vehicles, is huge. Hence why it’s really important to come together.

“The exercise has gone really well. It’s about recording what we’ve learnt. We’re about to go in to more traditional mountain training which is more on foot. Probably less of the heavy weapons and vehicles but that’s different skills.

“So we will combine the training we’ve done here and the mountain training when we go to Norway in January for a three-month deployment doing Arctic training when we will have the Vikings, we will have the heavy weapons. It’s about taking forward the skills we’ve got.”

UF PRO Plans to Launch Its New Delta ML Gen.2 Tactical Winter Jacket on 8. October

Tuesday, October 1st, 2019

TRZIN, SLOVENIA (30 Sept. 2019)—UF PRO said today its new Delta ML Gen.2 Tactical Winter Jacket for use by military and police units in cold-weather operations, is going to become available for sale on 8. October.

“There is no other tactical winter jacket that offers the performance advantages of ours, which is why we’re confident it will quickly become the Number One choice among tactical operators who’ll be trying to stay warm and mentally focused in the face of icy winds and bone-chilling precipitation during the months just ahead,” said Armin Wagner, head of UF PRO product development.

According to Wagner, key features of the Delta ML Gen.2 Tactical Winter Jacket include:
• Water-repellency and total wind blockage;
• Outstanding thermal insulation characteristics;
• Sweat- and odor-fighting properties;
• Exceptional durability yet light in weight;
• Easily accessed pockets inside and out, eight in all;
• Wrist warmers that come with cutouts sized for at-a-glance timepiece viewing.

The Delta ML Gen.2 Tactical Winter Jacket is constructed of a breathable, dual-layer, partially quilted outer face and a high-tech inner lining, Wagner indicated.

“For the jacket’s exterior we use a partially quilted nylon rip-stop material and beneath it is top-of-class 110-gram G-Loft thermal insulation,” he said. “The reason for partial rather than full quilting is this allows us to reduce the amount of thermal insulation required in places where it’s essential to maximize freedom of movement. Also, this contributes to making the jacket’s weight lower than would be expected given the hefty amount of winter-weather protection it offers.”

The Delta ML Gen.2 Tactical Winter Jacket additionally employs a COCONA 37.5™ microfleece lining system that permits use in outdoor temperatures as low as -10° C and that fights both perspiration and body odor, Wagner conveyed.

“Overall, the design strategy we’ve chosen delivers abundant warmth while minimizing your potential for overheating during periods of vigorous activity,” he said. “And as a result of that, if you do happen to get hot enough to sweat, you’re not going to feel wet and you’re not going to stink up the jacket.”

Carrying a price tag of 172€, the Delta ML Gen.2 Tactical Winter Jacket—wearable alone or as a mid-layer—is going to be available in Steel Grey, Brown Grey and Navy Blue, according to Wagner.

“We’ve enhanced the jacket’s durability by building into the side areas exterior mesh panels,” he explained. “These panels are made of abrasion-resistant nylon, so they’re going to hold up very well against constant rubbing from the straps of a backpack or plate carrier worn over the jacket.”

Wagner contends that Delta ML Gen.2 Tactical Winter Jacket wearers will appreciate its six exterior and two interior pockets—the latter being zipper-closable and sufficiently sized to stow mission-essential objects.

“There’s also a strap-operated pocket at the shoulder,” he continued. “It’s closed with a zipper, but to open it with using only one hand you need only tilt your head down, grab the strap with your teeth, and then open the zipper easily with one hand.”

UF PRO Sets 8 October to Launch Next-Gen Hunter FZ Softshell Tactical Jacket—Offers More Ruggedness, Functionality

Tuesday, September 24th, 2019

TRZIN, SLOVENIA (24 Sept. 2019)—UF PRO said today it will begin selling on 1 October its new Hunter FZ Gen.2 Tactical Softshell Jacket, an upgraded version of the company’s durable and versatile soft-shell mid-layer/outerwear for military or law-enforcement field operations in less-than-ideal weather.

UF PRO said this next generation Hunter FZ Tactical Jacket carries forward the features that made its predecessor. Those original features included construction with breathable yet windproof and water-repellent materials plus a smart pocket configuration and use of design techniques that allow the garment to fit the contours of the wearer’s body without restricting freedom of movement.

Among the key improvements to the soon-arriving Hunter FZ Gen.2 Tactical Jacket:

• Superior abrasion resistance, thanks to the addition of nylon mesh side-panels starting at the armpits and extending down to the waist;

• Elasticized cuffs;

• Strap-operated upper-arm pocket with velcro cover and a pen pocket

Retailing at €139, the Hunter FZ Gen.2 Tactical Jacket is going to be available in Black, Brown Grey, Navy Blue, and Steel Grey, according to Armin Wagner, head of UF PRO product development.

“We’re confident military and police professionals are going to love the enhancements to this must-have item of soft-shell tactical gear,” Wagner said. “And because the Hunter FZ Gen.2 is an anatomically fitted garment, it can be worn as a mid-layer underneath one or more extra layers, such as a hard-shell product like our Monsoon Tactical Rain Jacket

“The Hunter FZ Gen.2 Tactical Jacket is the ideal clothing-system add-on.” According to Wagner, the UF PRO Hunter FZ Gen.2 Tactical Jacket’s water-repellency makes it supremely well-suited for use in fog, mist, drizzle, and light-to-moderate rain, while its ability to completely block wind means even strong gusts on chilly days won’t cause shivers or set teeth chattering.

Its lining is 100-percent polyester fiber. This, Wagner explained, provides thermal properties that keep the wearer warm at temperatures down to 5° C and comfortable when the mercury rises to as high as 25° C.

“As with our other garments in the Hunter FZ range, we employ lightweight COCONA® Inc. 37.5™ microfleece for the lining material—and we do so because of its outstanding performance profile,” he added. “Among the things 37.5™ microfleece is exceptional at doing is drying quickly if it becomes wet from sweat. In fact, it dries so rapidly that you probably won’t even be aware that you were sweating in the first place.”

The lightness of the liner contributes to keeping the overall weight of the jacket at just over one-half kilogram and to helping ensure that the garment easily folds away or rolls up for stowage in a rucksack or duffle, Wagner offered.

SPARTANAT: First Time in Action for the TILO-6MA at the Outer-Limits Experience Week in Austria

Tuesday, September 24th, 2019

The TILO is still the smallest thermal imaging goggle in the world with a 640 pixel sensor. It has been used since one year in various special units worldwide. Also with the US authorities it enjoys increasing popularity and was procured. The new metal version of the TILO-6M is now equipped with an aluminium housing and is waterproof up to 20m and therefore also suitable for divers. During the Experience Week at the Grundlsee in Austria, enthusiastic interested parties were able to convince themselves of the possibilities of these smallest thermal imaging goggles to date. A German SEK (SWAT team) took the opportunity and tested the TILO.

The TILO can be fastened as shown with a very light helmet holder. For use with a diving mask a special spacer is used, so that the distance is sufficiently large. Alternatively an attachment to the Opscore Shroud is possible for this there is also an adapter available.

The Aluverion of the TILO-6M is also much more suitable than the plastic version for use as an thermal clip on. With its bayonet connection it can be mounted in front of a rifle scope within seconds.

In combination with the afocal attachment lens it can reach a detection range (standing man) of 2,5km.

Here, you can find the SPARTANAT report from outer-limits Experience Week 2019.
