USSOCOM Adopts 6.5 Creedmoor

March 23rd, 2018

Last Spring, USSOCOM undertook a study of 6.5 family cartridges to determine a path forward for Precision Intermediate Caliber Ammunition. Over the last year, USASOC, the primary driver of this initiative, narrowed it down to 260 Remington and 6.5 Creemoor. Testing indicated that the two calibers performed very closely.

Last month, the command conducted a reliability test, using two incumbent weapons, currently in US service; the FN SCAR Heavy and KAC M110. Two weapons of each type were used, one was in 260 Remington and the other in 6.5 CM. What they found is that both weapons performed just as well and were just as reliable in either caliber.

As both cartridges were similarly accurate and reliable, the determining factor for selection of 6.5 CM would end up being trade space. The prevailing attitude is that there was more room with the 6.5 CM to further develop projectiles and loads.

I don’t expect a major announcement, or any fanfare with this decision. Instead, you’ll begin to see small movements toward configuring weapons to utilize this round.

At the USASOC Sniper Competition, there were several weapons in 6.5 CM. Yesterday, we gave a little tease on Instagram of a Knight’s Armament Co M110 in 6.5 CM.

Today, I fired a FN Mk20 in 6.5 CM which was configured as a demonstrator for new features, such as a non-reciprocating charging handle and AR-style stock. Shooting a SCAR Heavy is like taming a beast, but with 6.5 CM, the recoil impulse was negligible.

Briefings last year indicated that SOCOM was interested in looking at an intermediate cartridge family gas gun and light machine gun. However, the lay of the land is a little different now. I do not expect a full and open competition for a new car being in 6.5 CM. Rather, I expect them to modify the 7.62 rifles they already own. Additionally, there has been no recent talk of looking at a light machine gun in that caliber.

2018 USASOC Sniper Comp – MODTAC Chemlight Cache

March 23rd, 2018

Modern Tactical Creations are relatively new to the market. Founded by two SF NCOs, they work to create solutions to problems found at the operator and team level. They have several great products, but I thought we should introduce them with the Chemlight Cache.

FCE40E5A-BE8C-4804-BE53-0E954EDB236B

The Chemlight Cache is an injection molded PALS compatible organizer for chemlights. It is all but impossible to ascertain the color of a Chemlight until it is activated. Guys come up with a varity of means to keep track of them, but things can get confusing, especially in the dark.

MODTAC’s solution provides tactile identification, based on the number of bumps at the top of the Chemlight Cache. Additionally, it’s spring retainer allows you to hook the chemlight directly to the Cache, via its own integral loop, without having to use gutted 550 or mini zip-ties. To remove a Chemlight, simply pull down and forward.

2018 USASOC Sniper Comp – Modular Handgun System Enhancements From SIG

March 23rd, 2018

3AF25A15-05E6-49E8-882A-9336F0FD6889

Based on the commercially available SIG P320, the new Modular Handgun System can be configured as the full-size M17 or in the compact M18 configuration. MHS more than lives up to Modular aspect of its name, with possible upgrades not even yet conceived by the Army. For example, the slide is equipped with a removable plate to accept a red dot optic. Additionally, the fire control unit is compatible with other P320 grip modules.

In an initiative akin to the Special Operations Peculiar Modification (SOPMOD) program for the M4 carbine, SIG is demonstrating enhancements for MHS.

This has an M18 with an X-series grip. It incorporates an after market magwell, which works as a chute to speed reloads and also includes a Romeo 1T sight from SIG Optics as well as suppressor height front sight.

However, the slide can also be configured with an adjustable rear via the sight plate.

Additionally, they have installed a flat trigger and removed the manual safety found on MHS.

These enhancements aren’t being offered as a package, but rather as a demonstration narrator to get users to consider ways to leverage the weapon’s modularity.

SIG and after market accessory manufacturers continue to roll out new products. Even more will come now that the P320 has been adopted for US military service as MHS.

Erik Agazim to Launch Law Enforcement Charity

March 23rd, 2018

Erik Agazim, the founder of National Police Ammunition, is celebrating the company’s 9th year in business.

Hialeah, Fla. (March 2018)  – National Police Ammunition, founded in 2009, is focused on lead-free alternative ammunition, specially designed and developed for law enforcement use. In celebration of the nine-year milestone, Agazim is founding EALEO Charities-Erik Agazim Law Enforcement Officers Charities-to give back to the law enforcement community.

The soon-to-be-founded organization will be divided into three main categories, according to Agazim. These will be merit-based scholarships, a foundation for fallen officers, and an equipment grants program. Merit-based scholarships will assist low-income cadets with the tuition and equipment required by police academies.

Meanwhile, the assistance foundation will provide support for fallen officers and their families, through work carried out directly with local police associations. Lastly, equipment grant programs will aid under-funded agencies with the critical equipment and training ammunition which they require.

“I’ve had the honor to work with law enforcement for the last nine years and have learned the challenges they face financially,” says Agazim of the project.

“From young cadets entering academies without the resources to purchase simple items such as holsters, to veteran SWAT operators who do not have the proper equipment, inhibiting their ability to conduct specialized operations, I’ve seen it all,” he adds.

Agazim continues, “National Police Ammunition will donate a portion of its revenue directly to the charity through its new parent company, Defense Engineering Systems.”

Initially, the charity plans to donate $500 each month to the Miami Dade Police Chiefs Association officer of the month, along with a further $1,000 to the officer of the year.

A website is currently under construction which will allow potential scholarship candidates to apply for student aid, which will be reviewed by the charity’s board. The website will also offer grant applications to agencies for specialized equipment and ammunition needed for additional training.

“Law enforcement has blessed National Police Ammunition over the last nine years,” remarks Agazim.

“I’m excited and grateful,” he adds, “to have the opportunity to give back to their community.”

Erik Agazim’s National Police Ammunition is already heavily involved with a number of local law enforcement charities and associations.

The company currently sponsors the Florida Police Athletic-Activities League, the Michael Callin Memorial Scholarship Fund, and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

The Miami-based ammunition specialists are also proud members of the Miami Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police, the Florida Police Chiefs Association, the Florida Highway Patrol Command Officers Association, and the Florida Sheriffs Association.
