SCUBAPRO Sunday – SEALS in Spaaaace

Sunday, July 21st, 2019

As this week marks the 50th anniversary of the first man on the moon. I thought it would be a good idea to talk about how the UDT/SEALS teams have contributed to this effort.  The Navy, as a whole, had a large part in the space race. From using Navy aviators as astronauts. The first American in space, Alan Shepard, was a Navy officer. The USS Lake Champlain was the ship that plucked him out of the water and brought him home. Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, was a naval aviator during the Korean War. When NASA Langley invented things to test how far they could push the new astronauts, they would test them out on team guys.  From pilots to Frogmen to researchers and engineers, the Navy was heavily involved in the space program.

There have also been SEALS that have gone on to the space program. Capt. William Shepherd, Capt. Christopher Cassidy and LT Jonny Kim. LT Kim entered the Navy as an enlisted guy right out of high school, went to BUD/S then SEALS team 3 later became an “O” then NASA. I want to mention one other person that was at his last command before he was going to astronaut training. CDR Pete Oswald was the C.O. of Unit 4 in Puerto Rico. He died in a training accident in EL Salvador in 2002. There is no dough in my mind that he would have been a great astronaut.

Here are a couple of articles about the SEALS in the space program.

I know some of you are saying, SEALS don’t have a capital “S” at the end?  Well,  SEALS in an acronym and there should be. Sea, Air, Land, Space = SEALS

Flying Cross Honors Army Astronaut on Apollo 11 Anniversary

Saturday, July 20th, 2019

Three officers from three different countries (USA, Russia, Italy) united by a mission to space and a duty to serve humanity will launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Saturday July 20 at 12:25 p.m. EDT. Unlike the Apollo 11 astronauts who were heading to the moon for the first manned landing on the lunar surface, the crew of Expedition 60 will be heading to the International Space Station.

NASA Astronaut Andrew Morgan of the U.S. Army has been teamed with Alexander Skvortsov of the Russian space agency Roscosmos and Luca Parmitano, an Italian astronaut from the European Space Agency.

Of all the uniforms we’ve ever made, we can’t help but feel especially proud of the one we made for Col. Morgan. It has been a distinct pleasure to have seen Col. Morgan wearing his Army Green Service Uniform in numerous photos leading up to the big launch – when he will swap his AGSU for something a bit more suitable for space travel.

We wish Col. Morgan and his fellow crew-mates a safe launch, a successful mission, and happy landings upon their return to Earth.

Milwaukee Police Department Transitions to SIG SAUER P320 as Official Duty Pistol

Friday, July 19th, 2019

NEWINGTON, N.H., (July 18, 2019) – SIG SAUER, Inc. is pleased to announce the City of Milwaukee Police Department is transitioning to the SIG SAUER P320, 9mm pistol as their official duty firearm. The Milwaukee Police Department is a municipal police force comprised of seven districts with approximately 1,800 sworn officers.

“We chose the SIG SAUER P320 as the official duty firearm for the men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department based on the pistol’s superior performance, accuracy, and dependability throughout our rigorous testing process,” began Chief Alfonso Morales, Milwaukee Police Department.  “During this transition we are finding that our officers appreciate the ability to choose their grip size based on the modularity of the P320, and we are seeing the positive effects of this comfort in higher qualifying scores overall.  Our transition to the SIG SAUER P320 has been seamless, and we couldn’t be more pleased with our decision to make it the official duty pistol of the Milwaukee Police Department.”

The P320 is a modular, striker-fired pistol available in full-size, carry, compact, and subcompact sizing.  The serialized trigger group makes the P320 adaptable to multiple caliber, size, and grip options. The P320 is available in 9mm, .357SIG, 40S&W, and .45ACP, with a choice of contrast, or SIGLITE Night Sights. The intuitive 3-point takedown requires no trigger pull for disassembly, and safety features include a striker safety, disconnect safety, and optional manual safety.

“SIG SAUER is honored to earn the trust of the men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department through their selection of the SIG SAUER P320 Pistol as their official duty pistol,” added Tom Jankiewicz, Executive Vice President, Law Enforcement Sales, SIG SAUER Inc.  “The unprecedented modularity of the P320 will serve this large department, with a diverse group of officers, well into the future, and we look forward to developing a long partnership with the Milwaukee Police Department.”

SureFire Shows Us Why Signature Reduction Is A Priority

Wednesday, July 17th, 2019

Fountain Valley, CA—SureFire, LLC, manufacturer of the world’s finest—and most innovative—illumination tools and tactical products, has launched a new video highlighting one factor for consideration when purchasing a suppressor. In this video, SureFire VP of Suppressors and Weapons Barry Dueck, and SureFire Director of Product Management for Suppressors and Weapons Cody Carroll, demonstrate the USASOC Operator Suppressor System Durability Test to compare the performance of the SureFire SOCOM556-RC2 suppressor against a competitor’s low back-pressure suppressor.

SureFire’s philosophy has always been that durability, signature reduction, accuracy, repeatability and sound suppression are the most important factors to consider when evaluating a suppressor design for combat or duty use. In this video, we are addressing the issue of flash signature by comparing the SOCOM556-RC2 to a low-back pressure competitor. Our combat-proven and US Special Operations Command selected series of suppressors eliminate the first-round flash phenomenon and continue to suppress flash signature through continuous firing, be it is semi-auto, pairs, bursts or full-auto. Built for consistent performance and a long service life, every SureFire suppressor is proudly designed and manufactured in the USA.

It should be noted that the USASOC Operator Suppressor System Durability test is torturous to the host firearm, however one can experience the reults in the video in a much shorter round count or abbreviated version of the test.
