Legion Firearms – LF-15D

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

The LF-15D from Legion Firearms is out now out; it’s a little bit different than the C model but still definitely on the high end of ARs.

Obviously, not everyone wants a monolithic upper. Some people want very specific rails, whether a particular brand suits them or just to break up the monotony. Legion is offering matched non-monolithic upper and lower receivers, so the customer can specify the style of manufacturer of rails they want (if any) and Legion puts them on (For instance, they did some with Wilson trim rails recently), The LF-15D has the same billet uppers and lowers, it’s ambidextrous and everything else such as the BattleComp 1.0 or 2.0 (as requested) with standard Revo sling and the Phase 5 Tactical charging handle assembly (which Legion helped T&E).

The LF-15D barrel uses the Legion Firearms as-yet-unnamed proprietary honeycomb fluted weight saving system. The honeycomb is a patterned barrel and is now available on their new rifles. It allows them to take an entire half pound of rifle weight in material and keep the same accuracy without any barrel walk or stringer groups (like you get when the barrel heats up). The upper, lower and bolt carrier group are all coated in Nickel Boron; barrel is ordinance grade 416 stainless steel, 5.56 NATO Chamber 1/8 twist, 3 groove polygonal rifling, mid length gas system PRI gasblock and the springs are Cryo treated, with a CMC 3.5lbs single stage trigger.

There will be a California edition LF-15D, just like the Charlie model had.

Velcro USA Inc Unveils New Printed Hook and Loop Technology

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Velcro USA Inc, has announced its official launch of printed loop technology at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2012. This product allows loop product to blend with the camouflage patterns of soldier and professional user uniforms, thereby improving overall performance of clothing and individual equipment. That’s right, camouflage printed Velcro is finally available.

In a press release Velcro USA had this to say:
Printed loop technology has been a priority for Velcro USA Inc since it was determined by the Department of Defense that signature management is paramount for our men and women in uniform. Focusing on every opportunity for improvement in signature management necessitated the development of previously unavailable printed loop that would blend seamlessly into combat uniforms.

This isn’t the first time that Velcro has developed new products specifically for the military. They went on to say, “Velcro USA Inc has been working with the DoD for several decades to develop hook and loop technologies that directly meet unique mission needs. The company has recently invested significant energy in a robust research effort to arrive at next-generation products that improve performance of uniform and equipment for our soldiers and end-users. Notably, printing on loop type material is extraordinarily difficult, particularly when ensuring that the stringent technical requirements of the DoD are met.

“This printed loop technology is a breakthrough product that greatly enhances soldier performance in combat and meets a direct need of the US military. We are extremely proud at Velcro USA Inc. to work with the DoD to develop solutions for the needs of our men and women in uniform,” said Will Tagye, Senior Marketing Manager-Government for Velcro USA Inc. “Our employees in New Hampshire are dedicated to manufacturing in the United States and ensuring that we do not lose the capability to develop and field these vital technologies for our soldiers and professional users. This is just the beginning of many new exciting products to expect out of Velcro USA Inc.”

The new printed hook and loop technology is available to DoD contractors and other tactical and commercial customers now. Interested parties may see the technology firsthand on several new pieces of equipment at the Shooting Hunting and Outdoors Show (SHOT) in Las Vegas, January 17-19, 2012 or at the Velcro USA Inc. Booth, #155-317, at Outdoor Retailer Winter 2012 taking place in Salt Lake City, January 19-21, 2012.

Jonathon Long Talks Federal Prison Industries

Friday, December 30th, 2011

My friend Jonathon Long has a blog that frequently discusses government contract and procurement issues. This time he takes on the issue of set asides for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and their business (yes business), UNICOR that is a protected source of procurement for many products used by military personnel including uniforms and helmets. We discussed this issue over the summer. It is our position that incarceration of those convicted of crimes is a burden that must be borne by society through its government administered institutions. The moment incarceration becomes a profit generating enterprise it becomes vulnerable to corruption. UNICOR uses prison labor to produce a wide variety of products. They pay prisoners pennies for their work. Oftentimes, UNICOR products cost more than their commercial counterparts. You do the math. What’s more, PPE produced by UNICOR has failed in the past. Set asides, that guarantee contracts to UNICOR should stop. If they want the business, they should competitively bid like everyone else and be required to pay a minimum wage for their laborers.

Discreet Body Armor LLC

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

Discreet Body Armor, LLC is a small Missouri-based company that has caught the eye of their local news network which ran a story on their bullet proof computer bags and folios. Quite simply, the bags contain armor panels and when unzipped can be worn as armor. With the increase in workplace violence, we’re surprised we haven’t seen more products like these. Conceptually, it sounds great. But, the thing that raised my eyebrows a bit is the demo video.

I saw Richard Davis do this to himself when he ran Second Chance but it wasn’t in an office and there wasn’t a guy doing it to him. I appreciate Mr Griffin’s confidence in his products but I have a bit of hesitation getting behind stunts like this. All in all, it looks like a great product. Hopefully, they will reevaluate their marketing.

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

We just received some very exciting news. After retiring in 1992, John Bianchi is returning to the tactical market. He will be lending his unique vision in design to a new line of lights and more with FoxFury. Granted, Mr Bianchi never went completely away. He has been hand crafting holsters for the discriminating shooter for many years at Frontier Gunleather, but this is the first time he will be mainstream in many years.

Mr Bianchi will be joining FoxFury in their booth at SHOT Show (Booth #26206). Make sure you stop by and say hello.

Liquid Introduces ‘Brimstone’ Low IR Signature Eye Protection

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

As signature management becomes more and more important, even the smallest of details need to be tended to. Liquid Icon, Inc realizes this and has developed a low infrared coating for protective eyewear that reduces IR signature under thermographic imaging. Liquid’s IR “Brimstone” Coating is an IR absorbing material equivalent to the resistive coating applied to military vehicles. It reduces IR reflection under illumination and is exclusively available on Liquid’s low profile Hellfire glasses/goggle model. The all encompassing Hellfire is ANSI Z87.1 – 2010 certified and utilizes a rapid transitioning photochromic ballistic lens installed into a 6061 billet alloy frame.
