Gen III ECWCS Pro Packs

ADS is the prime contractor for the US Army’s Gen III Extended Cold Weather Clothing System. Up to now they have been hard at work fulfilling the initial push of deliveries to the Army and have been unable to service individual orders. But they have built up their stock and are now offering sales to you.

They have developed tailored packages to meet any need and at great prices. For example, the Mid-Weight Cold Weather Package would retail for about $680.00 if sold separately but can be had at over $180.00 in savings when purchased as a single unit.

The Mid-Weight Cold Weather Package is going to prove very popular so we want to give you an idea of what is being offered.

The Package Includes:
GEN III ECWCS Level V Soft Shell Cold Weather Jacket and Trousers as well as the Mid-Weight Shirt and Drawers.

The Level V Soft Shell Cold Weather Jacket and Trousers are made from a wind and water resistant soft shell material and come in UCP. The material has a certain amount of mechanical stretch. They are designed for use in moderate to cold weather conditions as a soft shell combined with other base and insulative layers.

The Level II Mid-Weight Shirt and Drawers are manufactured from PolartecÂ® Power DryÂ® Grid material in Desert Sand. Intended to provide light insulation in mild climates and serve as a base layer in cold climates, they wick moisture away from the body.

SureFire Sneak Peeks

We had an opportunity to see a few of the new products from SureFire at the ADS Warrior Expo and Outdoor Retailer shows. Below is just a sampling of what’s next in tactical illumination and cutlery.

M300 Mini Scout Light

At half the size of the M600 Scout Light (hence the name M300), the Mini Scout Light utilizes a single CR123 battery. It makes for a more compact and slightly lighter alternative to the full-size M600. Unfortunately, it also translates into about half of the performance of the M600. However, as more compact and specialized weapons continue to see use, such a light may well find its place.

Surefire Helmet Lights

Now in its fourth generation, the Helmet Light has integrated several changes. Most notable is the new molded shrouds for the toggles. Instead of attaching an additional part to the light, the new shrouds are an integral part of the chassis which strengthens the design and reduces production time and material. Additionally, as you can see in the photo, the new light features a threaded battery cap with an integrated lock out switch. Rumor has it that an entirely new Helmet Light is under development and while no details have been released, features are being driven by user feedback and it won’t resemble the current model.

SureFire LX1 Lumamax

The LED LX1 is compact (4.1″ long) and features two brightness levels; 10 lumens low and 80 lumens high. Press lightly on the two stage tailcap switch for low and apply more pressure for high. Twist the tail switch for constant on in either of the brightness modes or to lockout the switch to avoid light ADs. Additionally, the pocket clip is reversible. There is also an LX2 model coming out that also features a two stage tailcap but goes to 200 lumens.

Edged Weapons
SureFire is also releasing two new folding knives; the Edge and Crank. As with their previous edged weapon designs, these are made in the U.S.A.

The blade is manufactured from polished 154 CM steel. A single hexagonal opening machined into the aluminum frame accommodates 1/2″ nuts, and a slot extension holds a coin firmly in place for use as a field-expedient screwdriver. Additionally, there is a built-in cord cutter and a bottle opener.

The modified spear-point blade is crafted from 154 CM steel and the the 7075 aluminum frame features a liner lock. Notice the prominent hex openings along the handle and set into the blade which can be used as wrenches (7/16″, 3/8″, 5/16″, 1/2″ nuts). It also features an integral finger guard/flip-open lever and a pocket clip.

Portable Seat and Tactical Storage Cover

The Team Wendy Portable Seat and Tactical Storage Cover is comprised of three components; Tactical Storage Cover with Pouches, a Portable Seat Pad, and Lumbar Cushion. It is modular in design making it easy to install. The Portable Seat Pad has been available for some time and proven quite popular with military and civilians alike. Imagine the same type of padding you enjoy in your helmet pads but in your seat. It works with or without the Lumbar Cushion to accommodate body armor systems. You can see in the photo that it is removable.

The Tactical Storage Cover folds over to cover both the front and back of the vehicle seat and zippers to the Seat Base. Elastic straps secure the cover around the vehicle seat back and non-slip Grippiumâ„¢ strips help keep the cover in position on the seat frame. While others have produced what are essentially seat covers swathed in PALS webbing, the Team Wendy design is unique. Stout pull handles are attached to the PALS panels which allow them to be “torn away” in an emergency. The PALS panels are attached to the Tactical Storage Cover via a combination of hook and pile tape and snaps in order to keep full panels from sagging during extended operations. In fact, this set up is secure enough to support up to a 50 lbs load in the pouches. What’s more, the tear away panels can be pulled open to reveal small storage cubbies. In addition to large and small utility pouches offered by Team Wendy, any PALS-compatible pouch will fit on the TSC.

Wild Things Lightweight Softshell Layer

At the recent Warrior Expo hosted by ADS, Wild Things unveiled several garments as part of a new layering system. While they are all excellent, one level really stood out; the Lightweight Softshell Layer. For those of you familiar with the Twight System, consider it a Level 5. This level which is designed to be complimentary with other Wild Things garments or used alone, consists of a Pullover and Trousers.

Designed to be worn under armor, the Lightweight Softshell Pullover is made from a combination of a 4 way stretch nylon/spandex bonded to a hydrophobic fleece, and a 4 way stretch nylon/spandex twill fabric. The softshell fleece fabric is used on the collar, yoke, and upper sleeves, wrapping around the cuff to protect the wrist. The softshell twill is used for the body and under sleeves, reducing bulk and friction. The cuff is finished with the thinner twill, creating a flat, snug band that keeps the wind out without restricting the wrist. A quarter-zip at the neck creates an opening wide enough to pull over the end, while keeping the zipper end above the top of the armor package. A longer body gives the wearer the opportunity to tuck the shirt into the pants, reducing any chance for it to get snagged, but the dropped tail will protect the rear even if the shirt gets pulled out. Bicep pockets on the sleeves provide easy to access storage, with Velcro patches for any badges. Pit zips under the arm provide optional ventilation, but also allow for the sleeves to be converted into short sleeves, with pockets under the bicep to roll excess fabric into. Such a capability was specified by the customer due to the danger of overheating during movement to contact or while in the assault.

With a slim athletic cut, these pants are designed to look great, as well as perform. The four-way stretch nylon/spandex blend moves with the wearer and stretches with every motion yet protects against wind, water, and abrasion. The high memory ensures that the pant keeps its shape even after being used and abused. The crotch gusset and articulated knees enhance the mobility without adding extra seaming or bulk and the belt loops were designed to avoid getting snagged. The pants feature four cargo pockets, two on the thigh sides and two on the calf sides. Additionally, knife pockets are sewn onto both thigh cargo pockets for easy access to a blade and staggered Velcro on those pockets aids the user so that the whole pocket doesnâ€™t have to open to get the knife. The pockets can be stuffed to the brim and the Velcro can still attach, or the pockets can carry a lighter load and be snapped shut for security. The angle on the thigh pockets rolls the stored goods forward so they are always where your hand is hanging. Zippered hems allow ease in pulling the pant on over boots, and gripper tape at the hem keeps the pants down around the ankle where they should be. A final touch is the addition of grommets to the hems so that they can be strapped down over boots.

FREE Components by Massif

The U.S. Army has selected five garments from Massif Mountain Gear Companyâ€™s flame-resistant product line for inclusion in the Fire Resistant Environmental Ensemble (FREE). FREE is a multi-layering system of performance cold weather garments designed specifically for aircraft and combat vehicle crew.

The five Massif garments included in the FREE program are Massifâ€™s next generation Elementsâ„¢ softshell jacket, pants, and vest, and the all new Massif Elements Liteâ„¢ jacket and pants. These innovative softshell garments provide flame-resistant weather protection for a wide variety of cold and wet weather scenarios without sacrificing comfort or performance.

Massifâ€™s Executive Vice President Chris Wasgatt said, â€œThe selection of garments for the FREE cold weather layering system is the culmination of a competitive two-year testing and evaluation process designed to outfit soldiers with the best flame-resistant garments available today. We are extremely proud that five of the core garments chosen for this program are Massif products and will serve our soldiers who operate in some of the worldâ€™s toughest environmentsâ€.

Massif garments and fabrics are made in the U.S.A. and are currently worn by ground troops, Special Forces, aviators and other military personnel based in Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world. In addition to supplying FREE garments, Massif is also the designer and fabric supplier of the Armyâ€™s flame-resistant Army Combat Shirt, new Winter Army Combat Shirt, and the still under development Army Combat Pant.

Outdoor Retailer Summer Market

For the next few days we are going to share some information from the OR Summer Market 2009. To kick it off we wanted to share this picture of ADS rep Bill Gassett hamming it up at Deuter’s booth.

Most of the usual suspects were on hand as well.

S.O. Tech has a booth that seems a little off the beaten path but it didn’t deter them releasing their new Adventure Pack System based on their successful Mission Pack System. In addition to the current tactical panels they have developed several specifically for the civilian market and these can easily be transitioned back over for tactical use by those who require more discreet capabilities. Additionally, S.O. Tech debuted their new K9 patch to add to their ever growing family of tactical symbology.

Eagle’s booth was very streamlined and focused primarily on the Waterpoint line was well as several of the new garments they have in production. Word is that the Waterpoint line will be expanding in the future.

Arc’teryx has some great new clothing coming soon on both the LEAF and commercial side. Look for a full report soon. Shown are the Freelance Jacket and Raider Pant. Unfortunately, these two items from the commercial line won’t be available until Spring 2010.

No Melt, No Drip Performance Tees

New from Cocona Fabrics in partnership with ADS is a no melt, no drip performance T-shirt. The concept is fairly new and intended to provide a lower cost alternative to FR performance Tees. This new undershirt is manufactured from fibers containing carbon from coconut shells. Originally, Cocona technology was designed as a coating for a Chemical Defense program to adsorb (Adsorbance is the addition of a molecule to a surface of a molecule) chemical agents into the carbon pores so that they would not come into contact with the user’s skin. Now, the technology provides evaporative cooling, odor management and UV protection (50 UPF wet or dry). What’s more Cocona fabrics are “green” using activated carbon made from recycled coconut shells. By using natural ingredients incorporated into yarns and fibers, there are no harsh chemicals or topical treatments to irritate the skin. Additionally, the no melt, no drip properties associated with this natural fiber make it an excellent candidate for those who face the threat of exposure to blast and fire. Cocona fabrics are used in over 65 outdoor and sporting good brands and ADS has produced a limited number of undershirts in Sand. Other clothing products are already in the works. I received one of the undershirts and my initial impression is that it is just as comfortable as combed cotton. I will keep you updated on how the shirt holds up to repeated wear and launderings. At half the price of an FR T-shirt, the comfort of natural fibers, and performance normally associated with synthetics, it looks like a winner to me.
