It’s Official – OCP Only Authorized Camo for USAF in OEF

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

We thought this had been a done deal awhile ago but apparently some USAF units were still deploying personnel to Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) in either the Airman Battle Uniform or Airman Battle System-Ground. However, Lt Gen Goldfein, AFCENT/CC has issued wear guidance (effective 1 April 2012) specifying equipment in OCP (MultiCam) as the only authorized for use in Afghanistan. In addition to the Army issued OCIE, the Tactical Flight Duty Uniform (By DRIFIRE and Eagle) and the legacy Desert Tan flight suit are also authorized for wear in OCP.

According to the memo, USAF personnel who are currently deployed with Digital Tigerstripe clothing and equipment, and do not conduct “outside the wire missions” will not be issued OCP replacements. Interestingly, we shouldn’t see combinations like the maintainer in the photo above. Finally, Airmen will wear cloth Aircrew Style Name Plates embroidered with their name, USAF and rank. Amazingly, those seem to work just fine in combat. Too bad the Air Force had to get rid of them in the late 90s for the BDU.

Thunder Beast Sniper Data Book

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

We’ve written several times about the awesomeness that is the their patented Multi-Environment Rewrite System. It’s been used for several applications including the US Marine Corps’ Battalion Infantry Operations Support Kit. Not only is it erasable, but it is also impervious to weather and human blood. Additionally, it remains there until you want it gone. Now, this rewritable technology has been used to develop a Sniper Data Book.

Officially called the Simplified Density Altitude – Sniper Data Book, it is a joint venture between THUNDER BEAST ARMS CORPORATION, GUERILLA TACTICAL, DEMIGOD LLC, and MIR/THULS. And, just like the name implies, data in the book is organized by Density Altitude which, once computed can actually be a constant across multiple environments and can be ascertained via a device such as a Kestrel or by using the density altitude chart in the book. As you learn more about your weapon and various loads/conditions, you can save it to the confirmed section of the data book.

The Sniper Data Book is modular. The standard version supports .308 Winchester (7.62 NATO) but you can add modules for additional cartridges. Already, the two military standard .300 Win Mag loadings, Mk 248 Mod 0 and Mod 1, are available as plug-in modules with more on the way. You can also add other standard THULS modules to the book for further customization. For example, you can use the glow-in-the-dark range card seen above.

It comes with three hard binder rings but these can be changed out for cable rings if desired. This article is only the tip of the iceberg. The learn about all of the aspects of the Simplified Density Altitude – Sniper Data Book, visit thunderbeastarms.com/products/databook

tasc Blaze SS Crew

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

I picked up some tasc Performance boxer briefs over Christmas break and really like them. Now, I’ve picked up the Blaze SS Crew and I love it. It combines materials and design to produce a comfortable shirt with a very soft hand.

Manufactured from tasc’s Performance Jersey and FlowMesh fabrics, the Blaze short sleeve crew neck t-shirt is a great choice for PT. The jersey knit (55% Organic Cotton, 40% Viscose from Bamboo, 5% Elastane) is super comfy and the mesh is still a tight enough weave that there aren’t holes you can see straight through yet remains very breathable. The mesh vent ingenuously wraps like a raglan sleeve around the top of the shoulder forming a yoke across the upper back and then down into the armpit. But then, the sleeve attaches like a standard t-shirt. Flat seams (even on the body) ensure comfort, even under a pack. The Blaze is also generously cut for plenty of ventilation. The design is topped off with a great narrow crew neck with plenty of elasticity that won’t bacon neck.

It also features UPF 50+ protection from the sun as well as anti-odor and moisture wicking properties.

Available in Heather Gray, Gunmetal, Ultra Blue and Navy. Only the Heather Gray is two-tone. Sizes Small – XXLarge.

MATBOK Backhand GPS Carrier

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

MATBOK developed the Backhand GPS Carrier after they found that carrying your GPS on your weapon or your chest gets to be a pain. For example, sometimes you don’t have your weapon in front of you or you’re using an entirely different weapon system. A chest mounted GPS can also get in your way when you’re trying to climb or reaching for for your comms PTT. Their reasoning is that you will always have your hands with you no matter what job, or weapon system you’re using. It’s a simple, lightweight design that gives the user the ability to have their GPS with them at all times. Designed to accommodate the GARMIN Foretrex, it carries it on the back of either hand in the same manner as an altimeter. The Backhand GPS Carrier will also accept a wrist compass on the wrist strap.

Available in Coyote, Desert Digital, and MultiCam from matbock.com.
